Snacks That Pro Chefs Are Loving

We know professional chefs (like us!) are experts on all things delicious, but what do they nom on in their down time? This was the inspiration behind Chef Partners. Despite what many of us may envision about the eating habits of our favorite foodies, their diets do not consist solely of steak tartare and crème fraîche soufflé.

Culinary pros are just like the rest of us and appreciate effortless, guilt-free snacking. So we asked a few hot local chefs about their favorite snacks...

Why Snacking At Work Is a Great Idea

You should be snacking at work… No we’re not talking about the candy-filled vending machine down the hall, or that box of doughnuts Donna from HR left in the breakroom. We’re talking about snacks with some actual nutritional value - but not just for the sake of your own health (though that’s a pretty good reason) but for your career too.

Why? Well the Journal of Population Health Management discovered some interesting stats...

Unhealthy eating leads to lower productivity. Eating unhealthy is linked with a 66% increased risk of loss of productivity.

Healthy snacking can lead to higher performance. Those who eat healthy throughout the day are 25% more likely to have higher job performance. Satisfying snacks help keep you happy and focused.

Poor eating habits lead to the dreaded Afternoon Slump. Eating snacks with protein and fiber throughout the day helps keep you energized and focused. Rather than starving yourself all morning, and then scarfing a big lunch full of empty carbs, causing a spike in your blood sugar level--and the inevitable crash.

If you’re trying to live a little healthier (hey, one step at a time right?) just remember, snacking isn’t the problem - junk food is. There’s no need to resist your cravings, just munch on hearty snacks that actually satisfy those cravings. And before long, you’ll notice how much more productive you are (especially during those Afternoon Slump hours).

We’ve all been there - the sun has set, the house is quiet, you’re finally done washing dishes from dinner and settling in for a Netflix sesh when you start eyeing the pantry…. The midnight munchies are kicking in.

But something about the dark of night makes processed junk food especially alluring, so it’s smart to have some better-for-you snacks on hand for when the cravings strike. That’s where we come in... 4 Ingredients Your Snacks Shouldn't Have

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by all of the advice and information about what you should or shouldn’t eat swirling around. Everyday it feels like there’s some new trend in healthy living going viral on the web. Don’t fall down the clickhole of trying to sort through fact or fiction, healthy or harmful. To help you start eating right, NatureBox is offering 50% off all snacks

Read on for a list of ingredients we like to avoid as a rule of thumb.

Artificial colors. Food coloring can and should come from natural sources. Artificial dyes are foreign chemicals going into your body, and people can have adverse reactions to them. Besides, why use Red Dye #2 when natural beet extract works fine?

Corn syrup. Highly refined sweeteners should be a no-go, and high fructose corn syrup is no exception. Opt for snacks with less processed sweeteners like honey or cane sugar.

Hydrogenated oil. Another heavily processed product, hydrogenated oils contain trans fat that’s meant to extend the shelf life of food products. It also happens to be linked to a higher risk of coronary heart disease.

MSG. Aka monosodium glutamate, MSG is used as a flavor enhancer in restaurants and commercial food products. Some people have been known to experience adverse reactions to it, so we avoid it altogether. Instead we “enhance” our snacks with flavorful ingredients and creative spice combinations.

You won’t find any of these icky ingredients in NatureBox snacks, so you can browse our 100+ options and feel good about anything you choose.

Are You Eating These 4 Foods Everyday?

Sure we all learned about the food pyramid in grade school, and how we’re supposed to eat some of every food group with every meal. But are you really getting all the macronutrients you need? We get it, life happens and you don’t always have time to plan and prep healthful, wholesome meals (wouldn’t that be nice?). But just be sure these 4 foods are part of your day.  To help, NatureBox is offering 50% off all snacks in each food group.

Fruits and Vegetables. Your mom was right--eat your veggies! It’s good to have some fresh produce with each meal to get your vitamins. But in case you didn’t have time to hit the farmer's market last Sunday (or any previous Sundays) there’s snackable versions. Dig into a bag of Dried Mango or Lightly Salted Carrot Chips for your daily dose of vitamin A. Meanwhile our Sea Salt Cassava Chips and Garlic Plantains are good sources of vitamin C (and very tasty).

Protein. Awww protein, the basic building block of muscle tissue. It’s easy enough to include lean meats and lentils on your grocery list, but it can be tricky to find on-the-go sources of protein. Plant protein from seeds and nuts are a good option, but for the most bang for your bite we recommend Jerky snacks for animal protein, like our Sweet Jalapeno Jerky.

Carbs. Carbohydrates get a bad rap, but they help keep you full and energized throughout the day.  There is a smart way to eat carbs--look for foods made with whole grain (which is higher in fiber) instead of processed grain (higher on sugar). Many of our Cookies are made with fiberful wheat flour, like our Mini Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies.

Fat. Believe it or not, fat is a requirement! It’s a major source of energy and helps your body absorb vitamins (see #1). The key is moderation and eating the good kind of fat (unsaturated). Yes, there’s such a thing as “good fat.” Our favorite snack for good fat is Almond Butter, which tastes great as a spread (or straight from the jar). But just about anything from our Nuts page falls into this camp.

Our in-house nutritionist and registered dietician, Maya, pulled together 8 snacks perfect for a pre or post workout pick-me-up.

Protein digests slowly and helps to sustain energy, while fiber keeps your blood sugar stable and allowing you to feel full longer. Pair any of the following snacks with non-fat Greek yogurt or a spoonful of peanut butter to give you the energy boost you need.

Big Island Pineapple
