Making it easier to find and enjoy local produce

from the NatureBox editors

Earlier this week, we talked about the benefits to your health and the environment of eating seasonally and locally. We even shared some resources for how to find out which produce is in season in your local area. Did you check it out? Which unexpected seasonal foods caught your eye? Here at NatureBox, we were excited to see that it is the onset of strawberry season in our area. Don’t strawberries just scream summer to you? They started popping up at our local farmer’s markets just last weekend and we couldn’t be more excited!

So now that you know what’s in season in your area, you need to figure out where you can find and buy this fresh produce. There are a variety of ways you can stock up on what is in season and thanks to the internet, finding local/organic produce, farms, markets, and CSAs has never been easier!

Local Harvest helps connect people who want to eat local, sustainable produce with the farmers who grow those foods. Their motto is “real food, real farmers, real community” and it is a great resource that you can use to find produce near you. Depending on your area, you may even be able to find sustainable restaurants and groceries as well as eggs, flowers, or handmade products nearby.

One economical way to take advantage of local produce is by joining a CSA program, which stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Joining a CSA allows you to easily stock up on a big box or bag of fresh produces from a local farm at a great price on a reoccurring basis. Depending on the farm/farmers, your CSA might offer a wide variety of seasonal veggies and fruits. For more information on the history of CSAs and what you can likely expect as a consumer, check out Local Harvest’s CSA page.

From the rain clouds over here in California to the mild temperatures in the mid-Atlantic, it’s pretty clear that spring is in that air and we can expect delicious local produce to start popping up all over the country soon. Spend a few minutes researching the local produce scene around you and maybe take advantage of the upcoming weekend to visit a market.

Let us know if you discover any new fruits or veggies this weekend, we’d love to hear about your farm fresh experiences!
